Shiro (Ground-Chickpea Stew) Recipe

This ground chickpea stew, or better known as Shiro wat  is a delicious stew which originated from Ethiopia and Eritrea.
It's one of Ethiopia's most popular dishes, and is also considered one of Africa's side dishes. 

Shiro wat recipe 

Shiro recipe, which is commonly eaten by Ethiopian household is made with the combination of onions, tomatoes, some spices amongst other ingredients.

Follow this recipe to make your very own Shiro wat in less than 45 minutes.

Shiro wat ingredients

  • 1 cup of Shiro powder
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • Salt
  • Berbere (optional)

Chop your onion and garlic and set aside. Put a pot over medium heat and heat your oil.

How to make Shiro wat

  1. Add your chopped onions and garlic and sauté for a few minutes.
  2. Add the Shiro powder and stir constantly for a few minutes
  3. Now pour in water and continue stirring until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Reduce the heat and bring the mixture to a boil (stir occasionally) then let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes.
  5. If desired, add berbere spice or other spices and vegetables, and continue simmering until the shiro has reached the desired consistency.

Shiro servings and storage

Shiro is mostly served with over Injera and a side salad, but it can also be eaten with bread.
You can store shiro in the fridge for up to 5 days, but it's best eaten fresh.
