Before diving into this wholesome snack recipe, it's important to know what exactly it is.

What is puff puff

Puff-puff is a traditional snack made of fried dough and eaten across Africa, especially in the west of the continent. The name "puff-puff" is from Nigeria, but many other names and varieties of the pastry exist. 

What is the Nigerian puff puff made of

Well, it's evident that puff puff is made from dough, so the Nigerian puff puff is made of dough which contains sugar, flour, butter, salt water and eggs, and is afterwards deep fried to gibe it it's golden brown look and color.

Where does puff puff originate from?

Puff generally originated from west Africa, a d is wildly eaten in countries like Ghana a d Nigeria.

Now that you know a few things about puff puff, here are the ingredients for making a deliciously succulent puff puff.

Puff puff ingredients


A few necessary ingredients are:
  • 250g if plain flour
  • 2tbsp of yeast (the precise one used for baking bread)
  • ½tsp of ground nutmeg
  • Granulated sugar to taste
  • 3 pinches of salt
  • Lukewarm water(for mixing)
  • Vegetable oil

NOTE: 

if your yeast is the kind that is in the form of tiny pebbles,you'll have to mix it with lukewarm water and set it aside you'll add it later when you have added water to the puff puff mixture.

But if your yeast is in powder form,then add it when you add the other dry ingredients to the flour (as described below)

PROCEDURES ON HOW TO MAKE PUFF PUFF

STEP 1:

*Put the flour in a bowl,add the grounded nutmeg,powdered yeast,sugar and salt.mix all if these together,while adding water in small quantities,and mix with your hand or a mixer till you get the desired texture,make sure all ingredients were properly mixed together to avoid lumps.

If you are not using the powdered one(yeast),then add the yeast you mixed with lukewarm water after mixing all the dry ingredients. make sure to use warm water to mix the ingredients if you want it to rise faster.

STEP 2:

*Keep mixing till the batter is smooth but not too smooth to make it watery to flow out of a spoon.cover the bowl with aluminum foil and make sure it is air tight by pressing the edges of the bowl.keep in a warm place and leave it to rise for about 45 minutes.

STEP 3:

* When it's okay to fry,you'll notice some air bubbles.pour out some oil into a pan

NOTE: The oil should be at least 3 inches deep.This is done so that the puff puff will be spherical when scooped into the oil,and to avoid burning.

Test that the oil is hit enough by putting a drop of batter into the oil,if it comes to the surface,then the oil is hit enough.If the oil is not hot enough,the batter all go down and remain there,and it may start burning,and I'm sure you don't want that.

Put in more scoops of batter as many as the pot or pan can contain,but try to avoid over crowding.

STEP 4:

When you notice that one of the side has become golden brown,flip it to the other side so that the other side will also be brown,you can reduce the oil in it as much as possible by using a sieve which can help you take away excess oil in the puff puff.
